Sri Lankan Air Force Chief Accuses Tamil Rebels of Changing Flight Route

Sri Lanka's Air Force Commander Jayalath Weerakkodi accused on Monday separatist Tamil Tiger rebels of changing the flight route of a seaplane which carried the rebel chief negotiator on his return journey to London.
Balasingham who stayed in the rebel-held north of the country for a month flew out of the country on Thursday via the Maldives en route to London after obtaining permission from the government, but the seaplane changed its flight route.
"It is still not known to us why Balasingham flew via Trincomalee instead of the agreed route," Weerakkodi told a local television station on Monday.
He added that the air force made an official complaint to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) and they are waiting for a reply. Head of the SLMM Trond Furuhovde said that he is inquiring about the matter.
Balasingham returned from London where he lives to the rebel- held north of the country last month on board a seaplane. He helped the Tamil rebels arrange for the peace talks with the government which are expected to be held in Thailand in June.
