Madagascar's self-declared president Marc Ravalomanana has won the first round of presidential election held last December, the country's High Constitutional Court (HCC) announced on Monday.

Ravalomanana has won 51.46 percent of the ballots against outgoing President Didier Ratsiraka who got 35.90 percent of the votes, said the HCC following a recount of the votes.

The African island country has been divided between two presidents, two governments, two capitals and two armies since February when election disputes between Ravalomanana and Ratsiraka erupted into violent conflicts.

On April 18, the two rivals reached a peace deal in Dakar, Senegal, which called for a recount of the ballots to decide who would be the winner and in case that no clear winner emerged, a referendum would be organized for the Madagascar people to choose between the two.
