China's top lawmaker Li Peng met Monday with Jum Akukweti, deputy speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania.

China's top lawmaker Li Peng met Monday with Jum Akukweti, deputy speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania.

China and Tanzania have maintained close and friendly relations since they established diplomatic relations 40 years ago and both countries had been mutually supportive in international affairs, said Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People 's Congress.

China appreciated Tanzania's long-standing stance on the one- China principle, Li said, adding that he expected bilateral relations, including legislative cooperation, would grow.

Akukweti said Tanzania was grateful to China for its selfless support for his country's economic development, especially in aiding the construction of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway.
