Top Legislator Calls for Acceleration of Agricultural Legislation
China's top legislator Li Peng has called for bettering agricultural legislation to help tackle the challenges facing the country's farming sector following its entry into the World Trade Organization.
China's top legislator Li Peng has called for bettering agricultural legislation to help tackle the challenges facing the country's farming sector following its entry into the World Trade Organization.
Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People Congress, made the remark Sunday after hearing a lecture on agricultural legislation delivered by Cao Kangtai, deputy director of the Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council.
He noted that with the need for more laws on agriculture which apply to the promotion of agricultural technologies, land administration, seed development, water conservation, flood control, water pollution, and township enterprises among others, a relatively independent agriculture-related legal frame is beginning to take shape in China.
Agriculture of this country is of great importance but yet in a disadvantaged position, said Li, adding that it is facing tougher challenges with the country's WTO accession, which accordingly demands a change in the legislation system.
He pledged that the legislative body will lose no time in making amendments and passing new laws relating to agriculture, rural development and farmers' life and welfare.
