Israel Accepts Bush's Proposal on Transferring Ze'evi Killers
The Israeli government on Sunday agreed to accept a proposal by U.S. President George W. Bush to transfer killers of Israel's former Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi to American or British guards.
The Israeli government on Sunday agreed to accept a proposal by U.S. President George W. Bush to transfer killers of Israel's former Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi to American or British guards.
Bush's proposal is believed to be aimed at ending the siege on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's compound in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
According to an Israel Radio report, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon ordered a re-vote after the cabinet split evenly over whether to accept Bush's proposal. As a result, 17 cabinet ministers voted for the proposal and eight against.
Israel Radio also reported that some cabinet members in favor of the proposal argued that "it would be unwise for Israel to turn down the U.S. offer, since the Americans and the British were Israel's only remaining asset in the diplomatic arena."
According to an Palestinian source, the just-agreed proposal has not been formally presented to the Palestinians, but they are aware of it.
