Local people's congresses and its standing committees should pay more attention to the immediate interests of the people, said Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Sunday in Beijing.

Upon conclusion of the 27th session of the ninth NPC Standing Committee, Li said that despite the rapid development of Chinese economy and the continuous promotion of living standards since the start of reform and opening-up, some people are facing new difficulties.

"The issue of employment and other difficulties resulting from social institutional transformation are quite noticeable," he said.

"The NPC, elected by the people, exercises state power in representation of the people, and therefore, its work, which is closely linked with the people, should reflect people's wishes and represent their interests, especially the interests of those with special difficulties."

The session issued the NPC's plan for law execution inspection, involving safeguarding women's rights and interests, security of manufacture, medical system reform, solution of unemployment of disadvantaged groups, food hygiene and fire protection.

"These problems, of extreme concern of the people, are inextricably connected with the people's vital interests," Li said.

He expressed his wish to push forward the governmental and social work to solve these problems through the NPC Standing Committee's efforts this year.
