China's top legislative body has amended the law on importing and exporting commodity inspection to bring it in line with the World Trade Organization relevant rules.
The amendments to the law on the inspection of import and export commodities were part of a raft of measures adopted by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC).
The new legislation will take effect from October 1 after being ratified by President Jiang Zemin.
The amendments say that export and import commodities listed in the index shall be examined in accordance with the compulsory national standards, and those not listed shall be examined according to foreign standards as designated by the national administration for import and export commodities inspection.
Presided over by NPC Standing Committee Chairman Li Peng, the meeting also redefined two articles of the Criminal Code on "organized crimes" and "embezzlement of public property for personal gains".
They are expected to lay a solid foundation for fighting such crimes and boost the country's anti-corruption drive, Li said.
Two schemes on ethnic minority quota of deputies and how to elect representatives of Chinese Taiwan Province to the 10th National People's Congress were also approved Sunday.
An extradition treaty with Ukraine was ratified as well.
Three deputies to the NPC were recalled due to suspected involvement in economic crimes, the NPC Standing Committee announced after Sunday's meeting.
