President Jiang Stresses Importance of Social Sciences during University Visit
Chinese President Jiang Zemin stressed the importance of philosophy and social sciences during an inspection tour of the People's University in Beijing Sunday. He called on social scientists to be innovative in their research and to strive to find theoretic explanations to major issues facing China's reform, opening-up and modernization.

Accompanied by the university's party chief Cheng Tianquan and president Ji Baocheng, Jiang viewed an exhibition of the university's history, toured its library, and watched a rehearsal of the students' folk music orchestra.
He then held a discussion with teacher and student representatives, during which he called on party organizations and governments at all levels to make a concerted effort to promote the development and prosperity of social sciences nationwide.
"We must pay high attention to the important role philosophy and social sciences have played in the party rule and throughout the nation as well as in the building up of socialism with Chinese characteristics," Jiang said.
He called on social scientists to be innovative in their research and to strive to find theoretic explanations to major issues facing China's reform, opening-up and modernization.
While urging social scientists to actively learn from the cultural achievements of other nations, Jiang Zemin also stressed the importance of sticking to Marxist beliefs and methodologies.
The president then visited the students' dining hall and talked with students.
Jiang was accompanied on the inspection by vice-primer Li Lanqing, the Beijing municipal party chief Jia Qinglin, Minister of Education Chen Zhili and other senior officials.
