Japan Urged to Squarely Face Sexual Violence to Chinese Women

A joint declaration issued April 25 by three organizations urged that the Japanese government and units concerned must face squarely the past history, take up legal liabilities and make an earnest self-examination and confession over the war crimes committed in the past by apologizing, indemnifying and asking for pardons from the peoples of the Asian Countries including the Chinese people.

April 25 saw China National Lawyers Association, National Women's Federation of China and China Human Rights Development Foundation declare jointly, demanding solemnly that the Japanese government and units concerned must face squarely the past history, take up legal liabilities and make an earnest self-examination and confession over the war crimes committed in the past by apologizing, indemnifying and asking for pardons from the peoples of the Asian Countries including the Chinese people.

The joint declaration is aiming at the first sentence ruled on March 29 by the Tokyo local court, which rejected the prosecution against the "comfort women" system practiced outrageously by the Japanese government during the war of invasion against China, causing lifelong injury to the Chinese women sufferers, for which the Japanese government must take up legal liabilities without fail. This is another regrettable sentence following that ruled on May 30, 2001 by Tokyo local court on the suit raised by the Chinese "comfort women" sufferers for the Japanese government to make apology and indemnity. What is worth of our attention is that the Tokyo local court has for the first time recognized in the sentence the fact that the Japanese invading army did carry out injuring activities by practicing sexual violence to the Chinese women. It has confirmed therefrom the up-to-now continuation of injury consequences on the Chinese women sufferers, indicating a prominent difference from the sentence ruled by the Tokyo local court last year in which it did in defiance of the fact.

The joint declaration points out that the "comfort women" system created and first carried out on the Chinese soil in 1930s by the Japanese militarists has damaged the health and personal dignity of Chinese women sufferers in tens of thousands, causing lifelong and incurable wounds in their hearts and minds. However, those who must be held responsible for it are now still fighting shy of the facts, distorting the statutory laws and sticking to their wrong stand. The malpractice of the Japanese local court in defiance of the human rights and dignity of other people that goes against the peace of mankind has roused great indignation of the Chinese people and of all those peace-loving people in international communities.

The declaration expresses that it will continue to rivet its attention on the further sentence of the very case.
