U.S. State Department's Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston declared in Nicosia Saturday that a settlement of the protracted Cyprus issue is possible by June.

Weston aired the optimistic view at the end of a two-day mission aimed at accelerating the peace process. He had previously visited Greece and Turkey, the two rival countries with great influence over the Mediterranean Island.

During his stay in Cyprus, Weston held separate talks with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash on the developments of reconciliation.

Before his departure Saturday, Weston said he was satisfied with the "very useful" discussions he had here.

He said both leaders "have expressed the view that a settlement is possible to be reached by June," which he described as "a very worthy timetable to adhere to."

Weston said the United States is interested in the solution of the Cyprus problem, adding that "we are thinking in terms of supporting the process of the direct talks."

Cyprus has been divided into the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied the northern third of the Mediterranean island after a failed pro-Athens coup.

Clerides and Denktash have been engaged in face-to-face talks since mid-January this year, in an effort to negotiate a settlement to the issue of decades.

Referring to the U.S. role in the process of the on-going Cyprus direct talks, Weston said, "we provide diplomatic support to the U. N., the leaders and other parties who wish to have our support," but did not elaborate.

He stressed that the agreements have to be found by the leaders of the island's two communities.

Weston left for Brussels later in the day to have consultations with European countries on Cyprus before flying back to New York, where the Cyprus issue will be examined by the U.N. Security Council.
