The Sri Lankan navy has barred separatist Tamil Tiger rebels from entering a number of islands off coast of Jaffna peninsula in the north of the country for political work as the islands are military areas.
In a letter to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission supervising an indefinite truce between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels, the northern naval commander, Rear Admiral S.B. Weerasena, said that under the ceasefire agreement the LTTE members can be barred from entering military areas even if their members are unarmed and intend for political work.
He said that the LTTE rebels are also barred from bringing cameras and communication equipment into these areas.
In accordance with the ceasefire agreement signed between the two sides in February, specified numbers of unarmed LTTE rebels are allowed to enter government-controlled territory in the north and east for political work. The rebels have set up political offices in major towns under government control.
