Japanese Prime Minister Starts Visit to Vietnam
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi arrived in Hanoi Saturday noon for a two-day official visit to Vietnam as guest of his Vietnamese counterpart Phan Van Khai.
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi arrived in Hanoi Saturday noon for a two-day official visit to Vietnam as guest of his Vietnamese counterpart Phan Van Khai.
During the visit, Koizumi is scheduled to hold talks with Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and meet with General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nong Duc Manh and Vietnamese State President Tran Duc Luong respectively.
The visit, the first by Koizumi since he took office in April of last year, is aimed at further promoting the friendship and cooperation in all fields between Vietnam and Japan, especially in the field of economic cooperation, according to a press release of the Press and Information Department of Vietnamese Foreign Ministry.
Japan has been Vietnam's biggest donor and investor since it resumed official development assistance to Vietnam in 1991.
Japan had invested in 332 projects worth 3.8 billion U.S. dollars in Vietnam by the end of last year, making up 10 percent of the total foreign investment capital in the country.
Two-way trade between Vietnam and Japan reached 5 billion U.S. dollars last year.
Vietnam is Koizumi's first leg of his Asia-Pacific tour, which includes Vietnam, East Timor, Australia and New Zealand.
Koizumi is scheduled to conclude his visit to Vietnam on Sunday.
