Qi Hui Wins Unexpected 100m Breaststroke Title

World 200 meters breaststroke champion Qi Hui won an unexpected women's 100mbreaststroke from sprinter Luo Xuejuan at the Chinese National Swimming Championships here on Friday.

World 200 meters breaststroke champion Qi Hui won an unexpected women's 100mbreaststroke from sprinter Luo Xuejuan at the Chinese National Swimming Championships here on Friday.

Luo, who suffered a stomachache and poor sleep since early thisyear, led the event till the 75m mark before Qi surged from behindto touch first with a personal-best in one minute 8.27 seconds.

The Fukuoka world champion Luo had to settle for a silver in 1:08.55 and home favorite Luo Nan came third in a career-best 1:08.67.

Qi said: "I did not think I could win the 100m gold. I am weak in finding the rhythm over the distance."

"I'm happy for my personal-best time, not for the title," the 17-year-old said.

Luo, however, seemed calm about her defeat. She said: "It's allright since I'm not in my best form. I have tried all my best and that's the best I can show now."

Xu Yanwei of Shanghai collected her fourth national title of the meet with an impressive 100m butterfly in 59.78, alongside hervictories over the 50m, 100m, 200m freestyle.

Wu Peng from Zhejiang set his second national record in the men's 200m butterfly in 1:58.49, beating Zheng Huazhang easily by almost three seconds.

Chen Hua handed the Zhejiang team a 1-2-3 finish in the women's400m freestyle in 4:09.87, completing a golden double to her previous 800m freestyle crown. Tang Jingzhi and Zhang Yan, came home second and third.

Yu Cheng took the men's 1,500m freestyle at a formidable pace, winning in 15.28.35, Chen Zuo won the men's 100m freestyle in 51.42 and Cheng Hao edged Wang Haibo in the 200m breaststroke in 2:17.27 by 0.1 seconds.

The four-day national swimming meet will end tomorrow with the last nine golds at stake.
