More than 240,000 fake and shoddy motorcycle fittings illegally bearing such famous brand names as Honda were destroyed on Thursday in Wenzhou, a booming city in east China's Zhejiang Province.

The fittings, including bearings and chains, were all seized recently in the coastal city.

A source with China's General Administration of Customs (GAC) called the move part of the country's efforts to safeguard intellectual property rights and regulate markets.

According to the source, GAC has stepped up efforts to protect both Chinese and foreign intellectual property rights in recent years, and has registered more than 2,600 intellectual property rights.

By the end of last year it had handled some 1,800 cases of infringement of intellectual property rights.
