China's Top Legislator Meets Cote d'Ivoire President
Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), said Thursday that friendly relations between China and Cote d' Ivoire will make further, greater development in the 21st century.

Li made the remarks during a meeting with President Laurent Gbagbo of Cote d'Ivoire and Mrs. Gbagbo, who arrived in Beijing Tuesday on a week-long state visit to China. Chinese President Jiang Zemin held fruitful talks with him Wednesday.
Li described Cote d'Ivoire as an important western African country, and said China has always paid close attention to the development of friendly, cooperative relations with Cote d'Ivoire in various fields.
Li suggested that China's NPC will continue to strengthen contact and exchanges with the parliament of Cote d'Ivoire and help push forward bilateral cooperative relations.
Gbagbo said that there are no difficulties between Cote d' Ivoire and China in developing bilateral relations. He promised that Cote d'Ivoire will always uphold the one-China policy, and regard Taiwan as an inalienable part of China. He also said that is a firm stance Cote d'Ivoire will never change.

Political Relations: China and Cote d'Ivoire established diplomatic relations on March 2, 1983. Since then, their relations enjoyed a smooth development. Major visits to China paid by leaders of Cote d'Ivoire include Premier D.K. Duncan (July 1996 and Sep. 1999), President Hanri Konan Bedie ( May 1997), and the Parliament Speaker (May 1999).
Trade Relations: The governments of the two countries signed trade agreements in 1984 and 1996.respectivly. The trade volume between the two sides in 2000 was US$ 230 million, of which the export of China was 222.8 million; import was US$ 7.2 million.
