China Jails Fake AIDS Syringe Robbers
Two burglars were jailed for 13 and 14 years each for robbing a flat in the eastern Chinese port of Tianjin and threatening the owner with syringes they said were filled with HIV-tainted blood, China News Service said.
Two burglars were jailed for 13 and 14 years each for robbing a flat in the eastern Chinese port of Tianjin and threatening the owner with syringes they said were filled with HIV-tainted blood, China News Service said.
The two men, identified by their surnames Han and Tao, broke into a residential apartment in Tianjin in January and threatened to jab the owner with the syringe if he did not hand over his money, the report said.
The liquid in the syringe turned out to be a mixture of red chemicals and medicine.
The robbers fled with 600 yuan (US$73) but were soon caught, said the report.
The sentences came months after rumours ran in Tianjin and neighbouring Beijing that irate AIDS patients had randomly injected people in the streets with their blood.
Fears are now quelled as police have made public several such cases involving people threatening others with fake AIDS needles which turned out to be harmless.
