Chinese Premier Meets Kenyan Parliament Speaker

Visiting Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said Wednesday that China is willing to work together with Kenya to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in all fields when holding talks with Kenyan Parliament Speaker. The exchange and cooperation between the two legislative bodies have made positive contribution to the traditional friendship between China and Kenya, the Chinese premier said.

Visiting Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said Wednesday that China is willing to work together with Kenya to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in all fields.

Zhu made the remarks during talks with Kenyan National Assembly Speaker Francis Ole Kaparo.

The Chinese premier said that China and Kenya have maintained friendly relations for a long time and have had excellent cooperation in many fields since the establishment of diplomatic ties 39 years ago. The mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples have also been further deepened.

Bilateral cooperation in such fields as politics, economy and trade, culture and education, has become closer and more fruitful, Zhu said, adding that the two countries have also maintained good consultation and cooperation in the international arena.

Two sides to make joint efforts in developing ties
The contacts between the parliaments of China and Kenya have become an important part of the friendly bilateral cooperative relations. The exchanges and cooperation between the two legislative bodies have made positive contributions to the traditional friendship between China and Kenya, the Chinese premier said.

The Chinese government and people attach great importance to the relations with Kenya, and are willing to make joint efforts with the Kenyan side to further strengthen and develop the bilateral cooperation in all fields, Zhu noted.

"This morning, I had a very good meeting with (Kenyan) President Daniel arap Moi and the two sides signed several agreements. China will continue to provide assistance within its own capacity to Kenya in the country's infrastructure construction, " Zhu said.

During the talks, Kaparo said Kenya is very grateful to China for its help in many of Kenya's projects, he added.

Kaparo said the Kenyan National Assembly hopes that the two legislatures will further strengthen cooperation and increase exchanges to jointly enhance the development of bilateral ties, Kaparo said.

The Chinese premier arrived Monday for a four-day official visit to the east African country. Kenya is the last leg of his three-nation tour, which has already taken him to Turkey and Egypt.



Trade Relations and Economic and Technical Cooperation between China and Kenya
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the Chinese Government has provided assistance for many Kenyan projects such as stadium, methane-generating pit, hospital and road construction. The volume of bilateral trade has increased considerably in recent years. Main merchandise Kenya imports from China includes household electric appliances, industrial/agricultural tools, textiles, groceries, construction materials, medicine, etc. China imports black tea, coffee and leather wares from Kenya. The volume of bilateral trade between China and Kenya was US$ 136.933 million in 2000, with US$133.083 million of export from China and US$3.85 million of import by China.

The mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Kenya started in 1985. At present there are more than 20 Chinese companies actively working in Kenya, including Jiangsu International Economic and Technological Cooperation Corporation, Sichuan International Economic and Technological Cooperation Corporation, etc.>>details
