The Sri Lankan navy Wednesday intercepted three boats carrying some 40 Tamil Tiger rebels who were fully armed off the shores south of Trincomalee in the east of the country, military officials said.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam rebels (LTTE) were remanded on the orders of the navy commander and secretary of defense.

The LTTE rebels were later allowed to disembark. Some of them were released and others were ordered to appear in court next month after a ceasefire monitor was called in to mediate between the two sides.

The government and LTTE rebels signed an indefinite ceasefire agreement in February. Both sides are expected to hold peace talks in Thailand in June, which is hopeful to bring an end to the country's 19-year ethnic war claiming over 64,000 lives.
