Indian Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Uma Baharti asked the Indian Olympic Association here on Wednesday to Bid for the 2012 Olympic Games, saying that the bid would have the full support of the central government.

She made the announcement after the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to identify opportunities to increase partnership between the Indian industry and sports administration.

"The preparation for bidding for the Olympics starts today," Bharti declared, adding that the signing of the memorandum was a historic moment and a path-breaking exercise in Indian sports.

The MoU, which is for a period of three years up to March 31, 2005, was aimed at facilitating regular interaction between the government, sports administrators and industry to promote sports in the country, the minister said.

It was specifically aimed at supplementing SAI's efforts in preparing Indian teams for participation in Commonwealth and Asian Games in 2002 and the Olympic Games in 2004, she told the gathering.

According to the minister, the finances raised by FICCI and SAI could to towards the procurement of world's standard sports equipment for various disciplines, establishment of sports science facilities, acquiring services of international experts and in organizing international competitions in India or facilitating the participation of sportspersons in competitions abroad.

Under MoU signed by SAI director General Shekhar Dutt and FICCI president R. S. Lodha, immediate actions will include identifying medal hopefuls and gathering industry support to supplement their training needs by either inviting experts to the country or sending the identified players abroad.

Indian sports administration will also procure the latest sports training equipment for various disciplines and to provide sports science back-up by funding Indian and foreign sports psychologists, physiologists, trainers, coaches, recovery persons and dieticians.

Action will also be taken to help in the prevention of injuries and provide assistance in rehabilitation of injured sportspersons and help in the creation of a data bank and publication of sports journals, which will provide the latest information on sports development around the world.
