Chinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing said Tuesday that China is to increase investment in grass- roots cultural facilities so that by 2005 every county has a cultural center and library and every town and township has a cultural station.
Li made the remark at a national meeting on grass-roots cultural work, which ended here Tuesday.
He said that China's cultural work, especially in rural areas, has lagged far behind economic growth and social progress.
"It is an important and urgent task to strengthen cultural work at the basic level now," he said.
Li noted that various sectors of society are encouraged to invest in grass-roots cultural facilities while using the government as the main source of funds.
Li also stressed the importance of standardizing the cultural market, saying that audio and video product piracy should be cracked down on fiercely.
