Premier Zhu Rongji Starts Official Visit to Kenya

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji arrived in Nairobi Tuesday at the start of a four-day official visit to Kenya. In a written statement delivered at the airport, Zhu said that Kenya is a country that carries weight in Africa and that over the years, it has played a positive and constructive role in promoting the cause of peace and development in the African continent.

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji arrived in Nairobi Tuesday at the start of a four-day official visit to Kenya.

Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi hosted a grand welcoming ceremony for Zhu at the Kenyatta International Airport.

In a written statement delivered at the airport, Zhu said that Kenya is a country that carries weight in Africa and that over the years, it has played a positive and constructive role in promoting the cause of peace and development in the African continent.

"China and Kenya have enjoyed a profound traditional friendship.In the past 39 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, the friendly relations and cooperation between our two countries in political, economic and trade, cultural and educational areas have seen continuous consolidation and development, with the friendship between our two peoples growing day by day," Zhu said.

The Chinese premier said that China-Kenya relations are now at their best since the establishment of diplomatic ties.

Zhu said that he is looking forward to exchanging views with Kenyan leaders on bilateral relations and other issues of common interest during the visit.

"I wish to attain the objectives of enhancing mutual trust, deepening friendship, expanding consensus, and exploring new ways of cooperation through this visit, so as to contribute to the promotion of our bilateral relations and China-Africa friendship," Zhu said.

Zhu flew in from Egypt's southern resort city of Abu Simbel at the conclusion of a five-day official visit to Egypt.
