Jiang Hopes US to Creat a 'Good Climate' for Sino-US Relations
China hopes the United States will strictly observe the "one-China" policy and the three China-US joint communiques, creating a "good climate" for China-US relations, President Jiang said Tuesday during a meeting with Donald Evans, US Secretary of Commerce, who is in China to attend the 14th conference of the China-US Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT).
Chinese President Jiang Zemin said that China hopes the United States will strictly observe the "one-China" policy and the three China-US joint communiques, creating a "good climate" for China-US relations.
Jiang made the remarks in Beijing on Tuesday during a meeting with Donald Evans, US Secretary of Commerce, who is in China to attend the 14th conference of the China-US Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT).
Jiang said China and the US, both influential major powers in the world, shared common responsibilities and wide-ranging common interests in maintaining world peace and stability, and promoting world economic growth and prosperity as well as in leading the anti-terrorism issue.
The president described his talks with President Bush last February in Beijing as "very good." He said following Bush's visit, China and the US had made progress in cooperation in areas of economy and trade, anti-terrorism and science and technology.
The two sides had also closely consulted over major international and regional issues, Jiang said.
But he said China-US relations had been disturbed by avoidable problems.
"We hope the US side considers China's stance, strictly observes the 'one-China' policy and the three China-US joint communiques, so that China-US relations and bilateral economic cooperation and trade have a good climate to grow in," Jiang said.
Jiang said China set economic development and the improvement of living standards as its basic, long-term goal, and therefore was willing to develop friendly cooperation with the US, for example in the area of economy and trade.
He said China highly valued the JCCT mechanism and hoped relevant departments of the two countries kept close contact, and promoted the growth of economic cooperation and trade to a higher level.
Evans said he believed China's development would lead to peace and stability in the entire world, and therefore the US backed the development of China.
Evans said his department would strengthen cooperation with relevant Chinese departments and contribute to the development of bilateral relations.
