Chinese President Jiang Zemin's two-week five-nation tour is a "complete" success, Vice-Foreign Minister Yang Wenchang said Tuesday in Tehran, the last day of Jiang's state visit to Iran.
Iran is the last stop of Jiang's five-nation tour which also included Germany, Libya, Nigeria, Tunisia.
During the visit, Jiang met with leaders of these countries and exchanged views with them on the development of bilateral ties, and China's principled stance on major international and regional issues.
Occurring against a complicated international background following the September 11 terror attacks on New York and Washington, Jiang's visit has met the expected goal of increasing friendship, deepening understanding, expanding consensus and promoting cooperation between China and the five countries, Yang said.
The exchange of high-level visits has been maintained and the mutual understanding and trust have continuously been strengthened between China and the five nations, he said.
New areas of cooperation between China and the five countries have been explored during the visit to promote the overall relationship in an in-depth way. A total of 23 cooperation documents were signed in the fields of economy, trade, agriculture, science, technology, education, oil and gas, telecommunications and transportation.
This visit is conducive to further promoting China's cooperation with other developing nations in Africa and Asia, as four out of the five nations are developing ones, Yang noted.
China's viewpoints on major international issues have been made clear and leaders of both sides have discussed ways to safeguard world peace and stability. Leaders of the five nations have regarded China as a force for peace and stability, hoping it play an even greater role in international affairs, Yang said.
He said that Jiang reiterated China, as one of permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, will continue to work for the peace process and the easing of tension in the Middle East.
The five nations attached great importance to Jiang's visit and warmly received him, which indicated that they treasure China's increasingly important international status and are ready to develop the friendly cooperative ties with China on a long-term, stable, equal and mutually-beneficial basis, Yang said.
