Chinese Gao Jing Wins Air Rifle in World Cup

China's Gao Jing won the women's air rifle 40 shots at the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Cup Monday in Shanghai.

Chinese Gao Jing Wins Air Rifle in World Cup
China's Gao Jing won the women's air rifle 40 shots at the opening day of the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Shanghai on Monday.

Veteran Gao, who was beaten to the second place in the Sydney Olympic Games, entered the finals for the first place for she shot off 400 points in the preliminary round, She registered 103.6 points in the finals and won the first title in the World Cup as well as for China.

Gao led from the first shot but faced severe challenge from South Korean shooter Sun Hwa Seo who narrowed the gap to only 0.1 points at the 6th shot. "I didn't care about other shooters' performance but to concentrate on myself." said Gao after the game.

Then Gao managed to shot 10.6, 10.8, 10.1 and 10.3 to establish her leading position. "I didn't start well in the finals because I was a little undynamic, but in the following shots I was back to the normal way."

"I am not satisfied with my performances at finals although I did good at preliminary round." said Gao, who placed only fifth with 101.6 points at the finals, "The result of final was the worst in my recent competitions."

The calm-minded Gao hugged one of her coaches and cried after awarded the gold medal. The coach, who did not disclose his name, said, "It is not easy for Gao to win her highest honor at the international tournaments. Today's competition is high-levelled and much more intense than the one at the Sydney World Cup event."

The victory meant that Gao qualified for the event at the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004. "I am pleased to have a berth at the Athens Olympics and I will more relaxed to attend the next stop of World Cup competitions."

The next stop following Shanghai of the ISSF World Cup will be held at May at Atlanta, United States.

South Korean Sun Hwa Seo was in second place at 500.4 points while another Chinese Du Li place third with 499.4 points.

Another Chinese shooter Zhao Yinghui, who placed second after the preliminary round, finished fifth with a total of 499.0 points.
