Hungary's opposition won the national elections in the run-off vote on Sunday with a slim 10-seat majority to defeat the ruling coalition.

The Hungarian Socialist Party (HSP) won 178 seats in the 386-member parliament and its junior partner Alliance of Free Democrats (AFD) gained 20 seats, according to the results of the second round of voting.

The election coalition of the ruling Federation of Young Democrats (FYD) and Hungarian Democratic Forum (HDF) got 188 seats.

The Socialists and Free Democrats have said they would form a coalition government if they win in the parliamentary polls.

The first round of voting was held on April 7.
