China Mobile's Subscribers Grow to 74.59 Million by March 20
China Mobile Ltd. announced Monday that its subscriber base rose 7.1% during the Jan. 1 - March 20 period as the mainland's biggest mobile phone operator continues to record strong growth despite steep competition.

China Mobile said it had 74.59 million subscribers as of March 20 , up from 69.64 million as of Dec. 31 . Last year, its subscriber numbers grew 9.2% from 63.77 million as of Sept. 20 to 69.64 million by Dec. 31.
However, the company said revenue during the latest period fell to 23.35 billion yuan from 28.3 billion yuan during the period ended Dec. 31 as usage slipped slightly.
Average revenue per user, or ARPU, slipped to 125 yuan during the Jan. 1 - March 20 period from 127 yuan in the Sept. 21 - Dec. 31 period and 140 yuan in the July 1 - Sept. 20 period. ARPU gauges a mobile phone service's profitability.
Meanwhile, China Mobile's mobile data services also recorded growth. The number of users rose to 25.25 million by March 20 from 21.32 million by Dec. 31 , while the volume of short text message services rose to 4.21 billion messages from 3.32 billion during the previous period.
