Chinese Premier Meets Egyptian Statesmen

Visiting Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met separately with Speaker of the Egyptian People's Assembly and Speaker of the Egyptian Advisory Council on Sunday in Cairo. Zhu said that Sino-Egyptian cooperation in various areas has been progressing well since the establishment of their diplomatic ties in 1956. Egyptian side also expressed their hope for strengthening cooperation with China.

Visiting Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met separately with Speaker of the Egyptian People's Assembly Ahmed Fathi Sorour and Speaker of the Egyptian Advisory Council Mustapha Kamal Helmi on Sunday in Cairo.

While meeting with Sorour, Zhu said that Sino-Egyptian cooperation in various areas has been progressing well and areas of such cooperation have been expanded since the establishment of their diplomatic ties in 1956.

He said that exchanges between the Chinese National People's Congress and the Egyptian People's Assembly as well as those between the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the Egyptian Advisory Council have played an important role in promoting friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Zhu, who arrived Friday afternoon on a five-day official visit to Egypt, said that during his stay, the two countries agreed on a series of measures to further promote their cooperation in economic, scientific, technological and other areas.

He said that China and Egypt, both developing countries, are facing common tasks and challenges, and they can work together in terms of economic growth and social development.

Egyptian people not to forget Chinese people's support
For his part, Sorour said that the two countries, both ancient civilizations, have made major contribution to the development of the mankind in their respective history, praising fruitful cooperation in all areas over the past decades.

Terming the Chinese people as sincere friends of the Egyptian people, he said that the two countries have also shared identical viewpoints on many regional and international issues.

Egypt hopes for increased cooperation with China, he said.

In his meeting with the Chinese premier, Helmi hailed China's accomplishment in political, economic and social areas in line with its own characteristics, saying that the Egyptian people will not forget the Chinese people's long-standing support.

    China and Egypt established diplomatic relations on May 30,1956. And the relationship between the two countries has been developing very smoothly. In the sixties, Premier Zhou Enlai visited Egypt three times. After that, President Li Xiannian, President Yang Shangkun, Premier Li Peng, Chairman of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Li Ruihuan, Vice Premier Zhu Rongji, Chairman of National People's Congress (NPC) Qiao Shi, President Jiang Zeming, Vice Premier and Foreign Minister Qian Qichen, etc. have visited Egypt one after another. From the Egyptian side, President Mubarak (seven times), Premier Gan Zoury , Speaker of People's Assembly Souour, etc. visited China. In April 1999,when Egyptian President Mubarak was visiting China, he signed a joint communique with Chinese President Jiang Zeming on establishing strategic cooperative relationship between Egypt and China.
