According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (MOFTEC), in 2001 China's exports to Kenya totaled 138. 9 million U.S. dollars, up 4.4 percent from 2000, while its imports grew 52.7 percent to 5.88 million U.S. dollars.
MOFTEC officials said that since 1990, bilateral trade has been developing rapidly. In 1995 the trade volume for the first time hit a record high of over 100 million U.S. dollars.
China mainly exports textiles, chemicals, electronics, metals and machinery products to Kenya, while it imports textile fibers, animal and plant materials, metal products, coffee, tea and aquatic products.
By the end of 2001, with authorization from MOFTEC, 25 Chinese- funded enterprises had been established in Kenya, involving 23.7 million U.S. dollars.
By the end of 2001, Chinese firms had signed 294 labor contracts in Kenya, involving 682 million U.S. dollars.
