Arafat Forms Palestinian Reconstruction Council

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat Saturday formed the highest council of relief and reconstruction ofthe Palestinian lands savaged by Israeli troops in the West Bank.

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat Saturday formed the highest council of relief and reconstruction ofthe Palestinian lands savaged by Israeli troops in the West Bank.

Arafat issued a statement published by the official Palestinian WAFA news agency, saying that the council that consists of 24 Palestinian National Authority (PNA) ministers, is for relief, reconstruction and distribution of Arab and international support.

The statement said that the council would be responsible for gathering information on damage, recruiting Arab and international funds to be sent to those suffered from damage.

Palestinian Minister of International Cooperation Nabil Shaath was appointed to chair the highest council, and senior negotiator Saeb Erekat was appointed to be the secretary general of the council.

According to Palestinian Ministry of Housing, hundreds of houses, especially in Jenin refugee camp in northern West Bank as well as the town of Nablus and other refugee camps in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, have been destroyed.

The Palestinians say that most of the houses were destroyed either by Israeli army bulldozers, or by Israeli tanks, helicoptersand F-16 warplanes.
