Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Obeid on Saturday held talks with visiting Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji on bilateral ties as well as regional and international issues of common concern.

Zhu said that China attaches great importance to developing an all-round relationship of mutually beneficial cooperation with Egypt, and regards Egypt as its "all-weather friend," stressing that Egypt is one of the most important partners of China in the Middle East and Africa.

He said that China and Egypt established strategic relations of cooperation in 1999, and the two countries have reached consensus and engaged in good cooperation on major regional and international issues.

He said that the Chinese government highly appreciates and is grateful for the Egyptian government's consistent adherence to the one-China stance, and its invaluable support on such issues as human rights and China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO).

"The strengthening of coordination and cooperation between the two countries not only conforms to the basic interests and common aspiration of the people of the two countries, but also serves world peace and stability," Zhu said.

He expressed the confidence that through joint efforts, the contents of strategic relations of cooperation between the two countries will be further enriched.

On his part, Obeid said that the Chinese people had made an outstanding contribution to the development of the mankind, and the Chinese government and people have been working for world peace, development and security as well as equality among countries, adding that Egypt speaks highly of that.

He said that there is a solid foundation for developing friendship and cooperation between the two countries, adding that Egyptian-Chinese relations have developed further since Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's visit to China last January.

Egypt and China have had fruitful consultation and cooperation on international issues, and Egypt is satisfied with that, the Egyptian prime minister said.

As for bilateral economic and trade cooperation, Zhu said that Sino-Egyptian economic and trade cooperation constitutes an important part of bilateral strategic relations of cooperation, stressing that the Chinese government has adopted a positive attitude toward promoting bilateral cooperation in the areas of economy, trade and investment.

Relevant Chinese departments are accelerating the process of implementing agreements signed between the two countries, he said, noting that Chinese entrepreneurs have recently had contact with their Egyptian counterparts in a variety of areas, and explored opportunities of further cooperation.

The promotion of exchanges and cooperation between businesses of the two countries is conducive to boosting bilateral economic and trade ties, the Chinese premier said.

He said that there exist enormous potential and broad prospects for advancing bilateral economic and trade cooperation, adding that practical steps to be taken by the two countries will bring about an even greater economic and trade cooperation.

Obeid said Egypt hopes that areas of bilateral economic and trade cooperation will be expanded in the coming years, adding that Chinese entrepreneurs are welcomed to invest in Egypt in an effort to bolster bilateral economic and trade ties.

Following the talks, Zhu and Obeid attended the signing ceremony of three documents on economic and technological cooperation, cooperation in the area of animal quarantine and the building of Chinese language schools with China's assistance in Egypt.
