Castro Meets Head of Chinese Sports Delegation

The Cuban leader Fidel Castro met with Yuan Weimin, general director of the State Sports General Administration of China, at the Revolution Palace in Havana.

The Cuban leader Fidel Castro met with Yuan Weimin, general director of the State Sports General Administration of China, at the Revolution Palace in Havana.

During the meeting taking effect at the headquarters of the local government, Castro expressed his thankfulness over Beijing's support of Cuba at the United Nations Human Rights Commission ( UNHRC), in Geneva, Switzerland, where it was approved a resolution against the island for human rights violations by a narrow margin.

The Cuban leader expressed his conviction that China will succeed in organizing the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, which also involve Cuba, and assured the Caribbean country supports efforts made by the Asian country.

On the other hand, Yuan offered a brief explanation of the development of preparations for the Olympiad and invited the Cuban leader to participate in the event.

During his stay here, Yuan met with Vice President Carlos Lage; with the head of the Cuban Olympic Committee, Jose Ramon Fernandez, and with the president of the Sports, Physical Education and Leisure Institute (INDER), Humberto Rodriguez.

Sports Collaboration Agreement
Cuba and China Saturday signed a Bilateral Cooperation Agreement on Sports, aiming at promoting an exchange of experiences between the two countries.

At the headquarters of the National Sports, Physical Education, and Leisure Institute (INDER), the head of this governmental organization, Humberto Rodriguez, and Yuan Weimin, general director of the State Sports General Administration of China, signed the document.

The agreement establishes the exchange of specialists, technicians and experts, the participation of courses and seminars organized in each nation, the collaboration in training personnel and the presence of sports delegations in events each of the involved parties organize.

Yuan, also president of the Chinese Olympic Committee and head of the Beijing 2008 Organizing Committee, was welcomed on the eve of Saturday by President Fidel Castro.

Late on Saturday, the Chinese sports deleagation are set to depart for Mexico.
