The prizes for respectable achievements and contributions in teaching and research have gone to 115 young teachers, said Yao Faming, director of Human Resource Development Office under the MOE,

According to Yao, the Chinese government allocates 50 million yuan specifically for the awards each year and the winners will beawarded finance support for five successive years.

One feature of the awards for this year is that universities and colleges in western China were given more attention, said Yao.

Besides the 100 regular award winners, the MOE selected 15 moreyoung professionals from higher education in western China, aimingto push forward the growth and development of education in westernregions.

According to Yao, 21,700 professors in China were above the ageof 55 at the end of last year, accounting for 42.8 percent of the total, while the figure of professors younger than 40 was only 7,000, making up 13.7 percent.
