Top Chinese legislator Li Peng says he hopes that the ongoing third annual meeting of the Association of Asian Parliaments for Peace (AAPP), with "peace and development" as its theme, will play a positive role in promoting peace and stability in central Asia.
Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks in Chongqing Thursday at a meeting with the speaker of the Upper House of the Supreme Assembly of Tajikistan, Makhmadsaid Ubaidullayev, who is attending the meeting.
Li said Tajikistan was a neighbor of Afghanistan, and maintaining national harmony, safeguarding peace and stability, and restoring economic development in Afghanistan was important for all Afghanistan's neighbors including Tajikistan.
Echoing Li, Ubaidullayev said Tajikistan would make positive efforts in anti-terrorism cooperation, and would strive for peace and stability in the region.
Li noted that China and Tajikistan were friendly neighbors and, since the two countries forged diplomatic ties, their mutual trust in politics had been continuously strengthened, traditional friendship had deepened, and cooperation in various fields had started with remarkable results.
The two countries had cooperated closely in regional and international affairs, and contributed positively to safeguarding regional security and stability and promoting common development, added Li.
Ubaidullayev said Tajikistan supported the meeting's theme and believed that the AAPP will play an increasingly important role in regional and international affairs.
