US-China Military Cooperation Very Positive, US Pacific Commander in Chief
US Pacific Commander in Chief Admiral Dennis Cutler Blair Thursday said that the US-China talks on the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement in Shanghai last week were "very good set of talks," which focused on the way how both sides operate together in this part of the world's ships and aircraft.
US Pacific Commander in Chief Admiral Dennis Cutler Blair Thursday described the recent military cooperative activities between the United States and China as " very positive."
Blair said that the US-China talks on the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement in Shanghai last week were "very good set of talks," which focused on the way how both sides operate together in this part of the world's ships and aircraft.
"We need to have an understanding of both sides," Blair said, referring to the fact that an agreement on individual working discussions of Pacific functional topics has been formed between the two sides.
He said the follow-up activities are also very positive. Here in Hong Kong, the forces of the US Pacific Command will take part in a searching rescue exercise with the Hong Kong Garrison and the People's Liberation Army, working together on how they can respond to individuals in distress.
Blair believed that there will be more contacts going on, both military and cross-border, in the US military relations with China.
Most of the really meaningful activities in the war against terrorism now are actual operations against terrorist groups, and the intelligence exchanges with both China's mainland and Hong Kong are the most significant part, Blair said.
"Right now, we are trying to build this picture of the terrorist network activities in this part of the world and we are taking specific actions in order to arrest and disrupt terrorist financial or logistic support, and that needs cooperation with both the Hong Kong government and the Chinese government," he said.
Speaking of anti-terrorism, Blair said countries in the Asian Pacific region agreed that terrorism should be rooted out and campaigned against internationally, but the question is what is the most effective way to do it.
"We have to have unprecedented cooperation within the government's police, military, intelligence and financial organizations, and cooperation across the governments," Blair said. "That is the key to winning in this part of the world," he stressed.
Blair arrived in Hong Kong Wednesday to participate in a meeting organized by the Center for Strategic International Studies. This is the third time he visits Hong Kong since he assumed duties as Commander in Chief of the US Pacific Command in 1999.
