China's top legislator Li Peng met here Wednesday with Kim Soo Hak, who led a delegation from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to attend the annual meeting of the Association of Asian Parliaments for Peace (AAPP).
Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said China is willing to promote traditional friendship and cooperative ties with the DPRK.
Exchange visits by top leaders of the two nations in recent years, in which many agreements on China-DPRK relations were reached, added to the traditionally good relations.
Li Peng said China welcomes the recent resumption of talks between the north and south of the Korean peninsula, and supports all efforts which are favorable to peace and stability.
China hopes the north and south sides will continue improving bilateral ties in order to eventually accomplish peaceful reunification through their own efforts, Li told Kim, head of the delegation of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly.
Li Peng also noted Kim's visit to China will boost exchanges between parliaments of the two nations.
Kim Soo Hak suggested that the DPRK and China, as developing countries, should play an active role in safeguarding peace and promoting development.
The AAPP, the largest regional parliamentary organization in Asia, opened its annual meeting Tuesday in Beijing. The meeting will continue in southwest China's Chongqing from April 17 to 19.
