Madagascar Rivals Meet in Senegal

Madagascar's two rivals for power --incumbent president Didier Ratsiraka and self-declared head of state Marc Ravalomanana -- met on Wednesday in a hotel in Senegalese capital of Dakar for negotiations.

Madagascar's two rivals for power --incumbent president Didier Ratsiraka and self-declared head of state Marc Ravalomanana -- met on Wednesday in a hotel in Senegalese capital of Dakar for negotiations.

The two rivals arrived here Tuesday at the invitation of Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade who offered to mediate in the three-month crisis escalating from disputes over election results.

Amara Essy, Secretary-General of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), Ibrahima Fall, United Nations special envoy in West Africa, and Wade were present for the talks.

Earlier in the day, after separate meetings with Wade and Essy,Ravalomanana told reporters that no agreement had been reached butthe talks were progressing.
