Visiting U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell Wednesday termed his Mideast trip as "successful", saying that he has reached some points which both the Palestinians and Israel can meet.
Powell made the remarks in a phone interview with Xinhua after his talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher and visiting Jordanian Foreign Minister Marwan Moasher in Cairo.
He said that leaders in the region agreed with the United Statesthat every possible effort should be exerted to remove what prevents peace efforts.
The United States does its best to establish a Palestinian stateliving side by side with Israel, Powell said, adding that the U.S. administration is working to achieve peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
Powell arrived here Wednesday afternoon to inform Maher of his peace-seeking mission in the Middle East.
A planned meeting between Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Powell on Wednesday was cancelled after Palestinian Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo described as "disastrous" the meeting between Powell and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in the West Bank city of Ramallah earlier in the day.
Rabbo said that the Palestinian demands for a complete and immediate Israeli withdrawal from the occupied West Bank towns and refugee camps were not met.
Powell has left here for home after ending his 10-day Mideast tour, which has failed to pressure Israel to withdraw troops immediately from the occupied Palestinian lands and to broker a ceasefire between the two sides.
Powell visited Morocco, Jordan, Egypt, Israel, the Palestinian self-rule areas, Syria and Lebanon.
