U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell started talks with Palestinian National Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat on Wednesday morning at the compound of the besieged Palestinian leader in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
Powell, who is on a 10-day visit to the Middle East, will hold a press conference in Jerusalem after his second meeting with Arafat, the local media reported.
At the press conference, Powell is expected to sum up his seven-day visit to this region, which was described as a failure by Arafat on Tuesday, for he did not succeed in persuading Israel to withdraw its troops from the West Bank.
Arafat had refused to issue a cease-fire declaration as demanded by the United States and was instead insisting that Israel withdraw from all West Bank cities first.
The local media reported that Powell will leave Israel for Egypt after the press conference.
