Fruitful cooperation between two countries

Visiting Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said in Ankara Tuesday that China is satisfied with the sound momentum in bilateral friendly and cooperative relations.

Since the establishment of their diplomatic relations in 1971, the two countries have had fruitful cooperation in political, economic, cultural and other fields, Zhu said during his friendly, candid and constructive talks with Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit at the Prime Ministry.

Zhu arrived Monday on a five-day official visit in Turkey, the first leg of his three-nation tour that will also take him to Egypt and Kenya.

Chinese side pays attention to bilateral ties

In the past two years, Zhu said, the two sides have taken positive steps and achieved marked results in implementing the joint communique signed in April, 2000 by the heads of state of the two countries when Chinese President Jiang Zemin visited Turkey.

Zhu said the two sides have maintained the fine momentum in high-level exchanges and the bilateral trade volume between the two countries has increased year by year as cooperation in other economic areas gradually expands.

He said the Chinese side pays attention to the Turkey's trade deficit with China and that it is taking positive steps in increasing import from Turkey.

Zhu expressed the confidence that bilateral trade would continue to develop smoothly through friendly consultations between concerned departments of both countries.

China and Turkey, as two important countries in eastern and western Asia, shoulder important responsibilities in safeguarding the region's peace and stability, Zhu said, adding that China attaches great importance to developing ties with Turkey and appreciates Ankara's positive attitudes toward its relations with China and its unremitting efforts in this regard.

Turkey values highly two sides relations

Ecevit, for his part, said Turkey values highly its relations with China and that developing Turkish-Chinese ties in various fields is an important component of Turkey's foreign policy.

He said Turkey would continue to expand trade cooperation with China and welcome more Chinese enterprises to invest in Turkey and more Chinese citizens to visit the country.

Besides bilateral ties, Zhu and Ecevit also discussed the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Iraq, Afghanistan and the issue of " Eastern Turkistan" separatists.

Before their talks, Ecevit hosted a welcome ceremony for Zhu in front of the Prime Ministry.

Also on Tuesday, Turkey and China signed four documents on cooperation in agriculture, customs and information technology and the purchase of Turkish cars by China's MinMetals Group. Both Zhu and Ecevit were present during the signing ceremony.
