China supports moves in Afghanistan to elect a transitional government which would be broadly-based and represent the interests of all ethnic groups, Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said in Beijing Tuesday.
Zhang was speaking in response to reports that the former Afghan king would return to Afghanistan soon.
Zhang said the current reconciliation of all ethnic groups in Afghanistan was a result of the efforts of all concerned parties and the international community.
A transitional government should be the one conducive to peace and development
China hoped that all parties of Afghanistan would jointly endeavor to rebuild the country and secure social stability under the leadership of the interim government, laying emphasis on protecting the interests of the country and its subjects, said Zhang.
Zhang noted that a loya jirga, or national council, defined by the Afghan interim government in line with the Bonn Agreement will open soon, and that China hopes the meeting a success.
The Chinese side believes that the establishment of a transitional government conforms to the fundamental interests of all people in Afghanistan, and is helpful to bringing about a long-term security in the country and is also conducive to peace and development in the whole region, said Zhang.
