Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), met here Monday separately with Ismail Zahir, speaker of the House of Representatives of Malaysia, and Tekiree Tamuera, speaker of the House of Assembly of Kiribati, who are here to attend the annual meeting of the Association of Asian Parliaments for Peace (AAPP).

Li extended a warm welcome to the guests and said he hoped the meeting would help friendly exchanges and cooperation between the NPC and the parliaments of the two countries.

When meeting Zahir, Li said that the bilateral relations between the two countries had made new progress in recent years.

China and Malaysia had frequent visits by state leaders, expansion of economic and trade cooperation as well as close coordination in handling world and regional issues, Li said.

Li also said that the two countries had shared a common view on comprehensively developing bilateral friendship.

Most participants to the AAPP annual meeting were from developing countries, Li said, adding that he hoped the meeting would benefit further cooperation between the parliaments of those countries.

Li said that the Chinese side hoped the AAPP became a usual and influential forum among the Asian parliaments.

Zahir agreed with Li on the future role of the AAPP. He said that he had studied the draft of the Chongqing Declaration, which he regarded as a good proposal for an official document.

He said he believed the upcoming AAPP annual meeting must achieve success.

When meeting with Tamuera, Li said that China and Kiribati expanded their cooperation in trade and economy, health, education and culture in recent years.

China had provided aid to Kiribati and hoped to push forward long-term and stable bilateral relations, Li said.

Tamuera highly valued the meeting's theme of peace and development, which he regarded as one of the most important issues in the world nowadays.

He said that his delegation, together with others, would make contributions to the success of the meeting.
