Palestine would consider a visit by Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov to the Middle East "very useful and necessary," Palestinian Ambassador to Russia Khairi al-Oridi said Monday.

Ambassadors from Arab countries in Russia invited Ivanov to visit the Middle East during their meeting last Friday, al-Oridi said. But the diplomat did not comment on Ivanov's reaction to theproposal, only noting that he believes this visit cannot be completely ruled out.

Al-Oridi assumed that Moscow is expecting the results of the ongoing Middle East visit of U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell so as to make a decision on Ivanov's possible trip there.

The ambassador criticized Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon'sproposal to convene an international conference on the Middle East, branding this idea "as an attempt to revert to the past and drag time out."

"Not a single Arab state would agree to this proposal of Sharon," he stressed.
