A U.S. Air Force fighter jet based in northern Japan crashed into the ocean Monday but the pilot ejected from the plane and was rescued by a local fishing boat, an official said.
Tomohiko Kakehata, a local fire department official, said the boat picked up the pilot, who was then plucked from the boat by a helicopter. Kakehata did not know where the helicopter was from or where it took the pilot.
The Air Force confirmed the crash of an F-16, but had no other details.
The jet was based at the U.S. military's Misawa Air Base, located about 350 miles north of Tokyo.
