U.S. President George W. Bush supports the idea of a NATO-Russia summit in Italy at the end of May to mark the founding of a joint NATO-Russia council, the WhiteHouse announced on Friday.
Bush made telephone calls earlier in the day to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to discuss a possible summit, White House spokesman AriFleischer told reporters at a regular news briefing.
"A NATO-Russia summit, in the president's opinion, would highlight the new relationship that has been developed between Russia and the West, between Russia and NATO as well as the UnitedStates of course," Fleischer said, adding that both leaders welcomed the idea.
Speaking to reporters after meeting NATO Secretary-General LordRobertson at the White House on Tuesday, Bush said: "NATO must develop new, flexible capabilities to meet the threats of the 21stcentury."
During his discussions with Putin, Bush also noted the recent trade dispute involving American poultry products, and expressed his hope that all those issues could be resolved quickly, Fleischer said.
