China is paying unprecedented attention to environmental protection, supporting it with record investment, Premier Zhu Rongji said Friday in Boao.
The biggest environmental protection project is returning large tracts of farmland to forest and grass, Zhu said at the first annual conference of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA).
China would strictly abide by the Kyoto Protocol and continue to reduce air pollution, Zhu said, adding that China's attitude towards environmental protection would remain responsible despite its economic costs.
Zhu pointed out that China had reduced its annual coal production from 1.3 billion tons to 900 million tons. On the other hand, China had to spend 25 billion U.S. dollars per year to import oil to offset the shortage in energy supplies.
