China Implements Green Project for Successful Olympics
China is implementing a "green project" tor turn out an environment-friendly 2008 Olympic Games, sources with the State Economic and Trade Commission (SETC) said on Thursday.
The SETC hoped this project would help to reconcile the country' s economic development with its resources and environment through such supporting measures as saving water and energy resources, harnessing new resources, reclaiming recyclable resources and encouraging environmental protection.
Concerning water conservation, the SETC supports developing water-saving apparatuses and used-water-recycling technologies and encourages technological upgrading efforts in the factories with relatively higher water consumption.
Solar and other new energies will be harnessed in the Olympic Garden, gymnasiums and other under-building public facilities to save traditional fossil energy resources.
The SETC said it also supported reclamation of recyclable resources such as used tyres, plastics, automobiles and household electric appliances.
Preferential policies and special capital will be earmarked for implementing the project, the SETC said.
This is actually a reiteration of Beijing's vow of a Green Olympic Games.
As news released from an international symposium on Beijing's infrastructure project held on June 28, Beijing will prioritize the environmental protection across the process of the city construction with an investment of 50 billion yuan by 2008. full text
