U.S. Secretary of Commerce Don Evans said Thursday in Washington that he will pay a visit to Japan and China next week to discuss trade relations with his counterparts of the two nations.

Evans, scheduled to arrive in Tokyo on April 17, will have talks with the Japanese side on "ways to enhance cooperation" between the United States and Japan.

The two sides are also expected to discuss issues such as steel, on which the United States imposed tariffs of 30 percent last month, Evans told reporters at the foreign press center here.

Evans, who will lead a business development mission to China, will visit Beijing and Shanghai between April 21 and 25.

During his stay in China, he will meet with his Chinese counterpart and other government officials to discuss bilateral trade relations and issues of common interest.

He said that his trip to China will strengthen ties between the United States and China commercially and more broadly. He also expressed his hope that his visit will increase the " government and business contacts that will hopefully lead to partnerships and opportunities for the people of China and for the people of America."

Asked about whether China is a favorable place for investment to U.S. businessmen, Evans said that "by the flow of capital into China, it is apparent that those who make decisions as to whether or not it's a friendly environment for investment have been making the decision that it is a friendly environment for investment."
