Premier Zhu Meets Former Heads of State, Government at Boao
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met Thursday with a number of former heads of state and government who are to attend the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) scheduled to open Friday. Zhu said that the BFA had developed smoothly since it was founded last year and its first annual conference had attracted more than 1,000 attendants.

These include Philippine ex-President Fidel V. Ramos, Pakistaniformer President Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari, Australian former Prime Minister Bob Hawke and Kazakhstan former Prime Minister Sergei Alexandrovich Tereshchenko who initiated the forum.
Zhu said that the BFA had developed smoothly since it was founded last year and its first annual conference had attracted more than 1,000 attendants while the topics to be discussed in theconference also aroused great attention, indicating the foresight of creating the forum.
Zhu expressed his belief that with joint efforts from all parties, the forum would enhance understanding, friendship and cooperation between Asians and those who are concerned about Asia.
Ramos, who was newly elected chairman of the forum's board of directors, said the forum, with the statute passed and board of directors elected, had started.
He said this year's forum had a surprising number of attendants,which showed that both the forum and the development of Asia were attracting more and more attention. He expressed the hope that it would be an important supplement to the Asian cooperation mechanism.
Both Leghari and Hawke thanked the Chinese government for its support for the forum.
Boao Forum for Asia
The Boao Forum for Asia, launched in February 2001, is a non-governmental, non-profit, regular and open international organization established in China.
It is aimed to provide a platform for high-level dialogues for Asian countries to review the economic and social challenges they are facing, and to promote economic cooperation in Asia, while opening up further to the other parts of the world.
