The first annual conference of the Boao Forum for Asia will open here Friday in China with the theme of New Century, New Challenge, A New Asia: Economic Cooperation and Development.
The regional gathering at Boao, a scenic town on the island province of Hainan, will attract political figures such as Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, Republic of Korea Prime Minister Lee Han Dong and Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, as well as renowned economists and heads of multinational corporations.
Moreover, the annual meeting is held at a time when a series of profound changes have taken place since the forum was launched in February last year.
The September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, the war in Afghanistan, the mounting tension between Israel and Palestine, the economic downturn in the U.S., Europe and Japan, big fluctuations in the world's major money markets and the setback of the economic recovery in Southeast Asia are all factors that pose new challenges to global economic growth.
Against the backdrop, analysts say, the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia provides a platform for dialogue between Asian countries and a new opportunity for cooperation between countries of the world.
Topics to be discussed at the two-day gathering cover major issues such as regional cooperation, economic and industrial developments, and efforts to maintain regional benefits and improve the general competitiveness of Asian countries.
Analysts say with the growing economic globalization, countries and regions in Asia, despite differences in economic and social environment, levels of development and cultural background, have reached a consensus that it is their common aspiration and resolution to work for equality and sustained development.
Though it is impossible to create a new Asia in a short period of time and Asians still have a lot of problems to cope with, the leaders and people in the continent are working for a more prosperous, stable and harmonious Asia.
