Cambodia, India Issue Joint Statement

Cambodia and India issued a joint statement on Thursday, stressing that the visit to Cambodia by Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee would contribute to further strengthening the friendly relations between the two countries.

Cambodia and India issued a joint statement on Thursday, stressing that the visit to Cambodia by Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee would contribute to further strengthening the friendly relations between the two countries.

During Vajpayee's three-day visit, India and Cambodia have signed 3 agreements on cooperation in air service, visa exemption for holders of diplomatic and official passports and restoration of Ta Prom temple.

The two sides agreed to expand their bilateral cooperation in many areas including information technology, agriculture, culture,human resource development, trade and tourism, the statement said.

They reaffirmed the traditional bonds of friendship between the two nations, especially the close friendship between the late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and King Norodom Sihanouk established during the early years of the founding of the Non-Aligned Movement.

The two countries agreed to explore areas for new initiatives to further deepen the traditional relations and bilateral cooperation.

India has agreed to work on the conservation and restoration ofTa Prom, a temple of the Angkor Wat complex, which is expected to cost 5 million U.S. dollars over a period of 10 to 12 years.

India also offered five computer internet kiosks to Cambodia tohelp support the country's efforts in promoting computer literacy.It will also send 10 Indian experts to this country to help some projects including those in information technology, agriculture, water resources and crop improvement.

India will offer 10,000 tons of rice for distribution among the Cambodian people especially for those affected in flood.

During Vajpayee's visit, the two countries also discussed the threat posed by international terrorism and agreed that concerted action by the international community would be required to curb the menace.

During their stay here, Vajpayee and his delegation were received in a royal audience by King Norodom Sihanouk. The Indian prime minister also called on President of Senate Chea Sim and President of National Assembly Norodom Ranariddh.

On April 11, 2002, Vajpayee visited the world famous Angkor Watin Siemreap province.

The Indian prime minister arrived here for an official visit onTuesday evening at the invitation of his Cambodian counterpart HunSen. He is expected to leave the country on Thursday afternoon.
